“Fall seven times, stand up eight.” – Japanese Proverb.
Our latest interview is with Nickolay, a.k.a Nick_Chvalun – a talented Video Author from Ukraine. His portfolio reflects a modern and dynamic style of video across promotional openers, titles, slideshows and more.
Check out his story, the importance of finding your own style and what he loves about the flexibility of work today.
My name is Nickolay and I’m Motion Designer from Ukraine based in Cherkassy – a regional center near our capital, Kyiv. I’m currently selling templates on VideoHive at this moment, and I plan to create templates for ThemeForest soon!
To what do you attribute your success – how is your business unique?
Before I came to Videohive, I had almost 5 years of experience in motion graphics as a freelance worker. As for success, I think that now will help me on my way there. Success – in my understanding, is like a mountaintop, it cannot be conquered, you can only get as close as possible. There are many talented authors on VideoHive, who are creating very cool projects – but one thing that is unique are my client’s and each of them receives premium quality, fast support and responsibility from my side.
What do you love about your work and why?
I really love that my work on Envato gives me the ability to choose what time and how many times I can work, what kind of templates I create and there are no deadlines! I choose the rules of the game for myself.
For my work, it also doesn’t matter where I live to be a creative professional. All things that inspire me are around me and only thing that I need is an internet connection.
What’s the most challenging thing about your work?
The most challenging thing is to make yourself rest. I love my job and I can work 24 hours a day, but I’m human and sometimes my brain just tells me –“Stop, you will not get anything from me until you have a rest.” It’s important to remember this.
What or who inspires you and why?
People who change the world – more specifically, people who have changed the lives of others for the better. That is my biggest inspiration.
What are some of the biggest lessons that have impacted your work?
You always need to take prepayment. I’ve made this mistake many times!
What’s your most memorable client/customer story on Envato?
There was a client who bought one simple logo opener from my portfolio a year ago and asked for a quick customization. Now, they are a regular customer, who buys every new project of mine!
What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?
Find your own style in animation and design. Don’t try to copy other authors. Yes, you can get some sales, but you won’t receive huge sales. Your own style is your brand. People love unique brands – so be unique!
Apart from yourself, who is your favorite author, and why do you like them?
I have a lot of favorite authors, but here are a few of them: videolancer, nitrozme, EasyEdit, Premiumilk, Motion-Bear, Motioncan. These authors create really powerful templates for their clients. Each of them have their own, unique style. You guys are amazing!
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I’m interested in absolutely all new and unknown things, but most of all – I love to learn about the history of my country, the world and business education.
What are your plans for the future?
In the near future, I want to create more products that will be useful to many customers from around the world!
