Interview with AncoraThemes

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?

My name is Henry and I live in Cyprus. I have been working with themes for more than 10 years now, but Ancora is two only two years old. It is one of our latest projects and it made huge progress very quickly.

Tell us one thing about you no one else knows?

I guess, nobody knows that I have only started using WordPress 5 years ago. I was amazed how easy things were for me. But that is a secret you can’t tell anyone, especially my workers!

Is there anything unusual or special about how you work?

First thing that comes to my mind is my working schedule. I work with breaks during the day. I find it hard to stay in one place for a long time. So I use long breaks to walk or jog and then come back to spend more time in front of the screen.

Another factor that I find extremely important for my job is dumping your own ideas. It is one of the biggest mistakes you can make for projects – to treat every idea like it is special. Every once in awhile you should get yourself together and get rid of some of ideas that you thought were important some time ago. You have to do with no mercy and in time, no matter how much did you love them in the first place.

Why are you doing what you are doing? What do you love about it?

I love the idea of creating something that inspires other people. Our products live their own lives and can bring real help to real people, not even talking about revenue and pleasure. It is just amazing how you can influence the lives of people you’ve never met. This is very important to me.

What’s your most memorable client/customer story on Envato?

Let me tell you a funny story about our first theme on ThemeForest.

We’ve uploaded several products on the first day, but you know how it happens, some products get accepted quickly and some have to struggle their way through reviewers. You can’t tell which one gets out first. So our first theme was…funeral bureau. We did not plan this, it just happened.

Some our colleagues made fun of us (especially that it was the only theme in our portfolio) but we could afford to be superstitious. Moreover, the theme is selling pretty for a micro-niche theme.

What’s the most challenging thing about your work?

It is definitely repetitiveness. The days are sometimes very similar to each other and that is where jogging and walking comes in hand, especially if you have a good walking area around you.

One other factor I find rather frustrating at times, is waiting for sales. These days the new items are not being actively pushed by Envato as they have once been and waiting for the first sales takes longer now. Also, I hate it when the market goes all quiet for some reason. Sometimes, it is the obvious, like the latest Easter sale, but sometimes it is just hard to explain.

Name a few people who inspire you and why?

First of all, my parents. They inspire me every day by their example – but I could also say that people like Steven Hawking and Nick Vujicic taught me this world is not about people that give up. I am glad that there are examples like that to look up to.

What is your advice to other Authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?

Be persistent, creative and never lose concentration. It does not take long to spoil everything you’ve been working for with one wrong move. It is all about the quality and honoring the principles of Envato and the WordPress community.

Is where you live a good place to be a creative professional? Why?

Cyprus is amazing. The scenery, the sea, simply everything. When you decide to pay a visit, shout out to me, I’ll show you the best places!

What do you do to market your files?

Here comes another big confession. We have almost completely relied on what Envato gives and simply played by the rules. I am sure that lots of other Authors do the same. That is why we are totally grateful for what Envato market has given us and we hope to grow together.

Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace Author, and why do you like them?

ThemeREX and AxiomThemes are not just friends to us, we are partners and we are practically one big team. I personally love what Fuelthemes are doing. A great example of how quality means a lot more.

How do you feel about your achievement?

Totally proud, especially that Envato is going to get a word about my achievements. I hope that we continue growing together and double our sales in the next two years! 🙂
