Working together since 2005, this powerful duo met while working at a website design office many years ago. Following a few start-up adventures together on the side, they started freelancing full time together and are now married with 2 children.
Get to know more about dtbaker and their experiences as a Power Elite Author couple featuring our interview with Hayley.
Is there anything unusual or special about how you work?
David has a Linux/Programming background and Hayley has Multimedia/Web, so we can build most projects without needing to outsource. Working from home has its challenges (especially with young children). We usually take turns looking after the kids while the other person works. We head out for our ‘weekend’ during the week while things are less busy and usually stay home working Saturday/Sunday. Maybe our kids will start answering support emails for us in a few years!
Is there anything unusual or noteworthy about your life experience?
We love traveling and it’s one of the reasons we started full time on Envato Market. The ability to create an ongoing income while traveling and exploring the world is amazing. We sold our house and most of our stuff a while ago and traveled around Australia in a caravan, working on Envato Market any time we could get an internet connection.
Why are you doing what you are doing? What do you love about it?
Creating a passive income has been a long-term goal for us, working 9-5 in an office for someone else wasn’t how we wanted to spend our careers. After being inspired by Tim Ferriss’s ‘4 Hour Work Week’ book we started seeking out ways to make money while we slept. Envato was the perfect solution, we had control over what we created, and Envato took care of bringing the traffic/customers to our work.
We now enjoy working from home with flexible hours, and most importantly spending more time together as a family.
What’s your most memorable client/customer story on Envato?
I’m always surprised when I come across one of our website templates out in the real world, many times I have been searching google and a website using our theme has popped up. There’s even a shop down the road using one of our themes. We popped in to say hi after they sent us a support email and they were blown away!
Also, recently my Aunt was needing a website so I suggested she have a look at ThemeForest to pick a template I could use for her – out of all the templates on there she just happened to pick one I created without knowing it; Child Care Creative was perfect for her children’s book, I couldn’t believe the coincidence!
What’s the most challenging thing about your work?
Finding the balance between developing new items and upgrading old ones and customer inquiries. You could easily spend all your time on one – we aren’t perfect and are still working towards getting the process right.
Name a few people who inspire you and why?
Everyone who has come before us achieving amazing sales numbers. I’m blown away by some of the figures and it constantly motivates us to keep inventing and improving.
What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?
Be unique, I know people often say that, but it can be a matter of just sticking to what you’re good at, building your portfolio and then expanding your ideas. At first, our themes were all child based as the category was empty when we started, we saw a gap in the market and focused there. I like creating graphic designs over plain CSS, so that is where I focus my time.
Is where you live a good place to be a creative professional? Why?
We live near the coast in a very mild climate, so we spend a lot of time outdoors. Our city always has events for technology industries so we can mix and mingle easily with like-minded people.
What do you do to market your files?
We’ve always had blogs that feature our items along with industry related articles, code snippets etc. We are fortunate that our themes are pretty unique and get picked up by other blogs showcasing our work. Aside from that, we rely on Envato’s huge traffic. We are working on creating more avenues for people to find our items through some new websites.
Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace author, and why do you like them?
The entire crowd from the original forums – you know who you are!
What do you do in your spare time?
We enjoy spending time as a family on day trips – Hayley enjoys photography and music, David tinkering with electronics and mountain biking.

How do you feel about your achievement?
We feel proud, it’s been a long time coming with many late nights, rejections, approvals, celebrations and everything in between. It has given us a welcome boost of inspiration to create more, streamline our processes and continue to be apart of the Envato Marketplaces.
